Laying On The Roof
With one or two helpers you ll be able to shingle a 1 500 square foot roof in about two days.
Laying on the roof. Start to finish 2 days. If you live in an area with inclement weather you should consider using a special ice and water protector. After completing a column the roofer can go back down to the eave edge of the roof and start laying the next column of shingles. Using your staple gun secure the felt to the roof.
Before you begin make sure you re comfortable measuring laying out a job driving nails and cutting with a knife. The next one goes on the low side. Weave and cut the valley on the highest side of the roof. Start by laying asphalt felt or other underlayment over the roof.
Lay the lower edge of the flange over the top of the lower shingles and the upper edge is positioned underneath the upper shingles. You won t void your warranty by going with the racking method but with some manufacturers you d have trouble collecting a settlement on two specific problems. Install new flashing metal. Then your first shingle goes on the side you are going to cut.
This is on its own a major job that can take days and require special tools. Cut the shingles to fit around the flange s dome. Position the first. You should have reinforced the frame of the roof earlier before.
Adhere the joint where the cut edges of the shingles meet the dome with roofing tar. Begin this layer at the bottom of the roof and add it in horizontal rows with a slight overlap to prevent. Both step shingling and racking will yield a watertight roof. If your roof s width is not an even multiple of the shingle s length you will have a partial piece on one end of each row.
Adhere the shingles adjacent to the flange with roofing tar. You want to lay the shingles from the bottom to the top of the valley. Roll out a single layer of roofing felt or tar paper which serves as a moisture barrier. Measure the length of a shingle as it lies across the roof.
Overlap each row at least 3 to 4 inches. Repair and reinforce the roof if applicable. This will help determine how the shingles will lay on the roof width. In today s video we go over the basic techniques to installing drip edge and rake edge on your roof.
Work up from the initial row starting at the lower corner in a diagonal pattern staggering the shingles to prevent gaps.
